As the current Honourary Colonel of 7th Toronto Regiment, and former Honourary Colonel of the Princess of Wales’ Own Regiment in Kingston, Brigadier General Beno retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1997 at the rank of Brigadier-General. Having served two years in the Militia (Lance Bombardier, 42nd Medium Regiment RCA, 1960-62), he enrolled in the Regular Force as a Gunner in the Second Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (RCHA), Winnipeg.
Commissioned two years later, he then served six years in the 1st Regiment RCHA where he rose from the rank of 2Lt to Captain in the 1st Regiment RCHA in Base Gagetown and then northern Germany. His regimental duty included Gun Position Officer, Command Post Officer, Forward Observation Officer and Regimental Command Post Officer. This was followed by attending Army Staff College, Kingston and the British Instructor-in-Gunnery Course, Larkhill, UK, and subsequent employment as an instructor at the Artillery School in Gagetown, NB.
General Beno held several command appointments, such as: Commanding Officer of the 1st Airborne Battery of the Canadian Airborne Regiment (Edmonton), Battery Commander ‘E’ Battery (Para) 2RCHA in Petawawa, Commanding Officer 2RCHA Petawawa, Base Commander/Deputy Commander Special Service Force of Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, and Commander Special Service Force, Petawawa, ON.
Other appointments were Directing Staff and Deputy Commandant of the Land Forces Command and Staff College (Kingston), Director General Reserves and Cadets (Ottawa), and Director General Military Personnel (Ottawa). He has been awarded the Order of Military Merit, and the Canadian Forces Decoration.
General Beno holds a Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) from the University of New Brunswick, 1978-80, and a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from Queen’s University, 1987-90. Military courses include the Army Staff College, the Instructor-in-Gunnery Course, the Company Commanders’ Course, a variety of NATO joint and combined operations courses and the National Defence College of Canada.
General Beno and his wife Mia live in Kingston, Ontario.
